REACH partners with local First Responders (whether a police officer, a firefighter or an EMT) to supply each vehicle with a REACH BAG — complete with children’s books and drawstring backpacks — which the First Responders keep in their vehicles to bring out when they encounter children-in-crisis. Police Officers consistently report that the act of giving the child a book immediately calms them and helps them to cope with the situation around them.

The REACH BAG Program operates as follows:

Each squad vehicle is equipped with a REACH BAG containing children’s books. When the police encounter a child-in-crisis, they offer the child a book which the child gets to keep. Children are immediately comforted and their attention is drawn away from the crisis or events taking place.
